TENNIS SCOTLAND’S CLUB OF THE YEAR 2010 – MONTROSE
“Forward planning, ensuring we stick to our improvement schedule and having fun on the way”, that’s what Jean Stevenson, the Chairperson of Montrose Tennis Club, said when she received Tennis Scotland’s Club of the Year Award. And what a busy year the club has had. They were the leaders in the North County to obtain the highly accredited L.T.A. Clubmark award and not only were they satisfied with one award for good practice they were also rewarded with the Angus Council, “Gold Award” for sport. A remarkable achievement in twelve months.
Last year the club submitted a bid to Peoples Millions to assist them in raising funds to install 3 new sets of flood lights, and in November they received £34,500 towards the project. In conjunction with this windfall, the club was able to re-surface 3 of their courts. At the beginning of this season the members were enjoying the enhanced facilities, with the programme scheduling all on time and within budget. There was a huge amount of satisfaction and recognition for the hard working club volunteers when Judy Murray agreed to officially open the club.
Montrose is a 6 court club and boasts a newly refurbished club house. They are very proud of the huge increase in their membership, which has trebled in the past 3 years. Jean said, ” Keeping our membership happy is our key to success and it’s by offering them competitions, social evenings, tennis festivals and anything our members feel we should doing”. To cater for the huge influx of membership, four of the club members are currently progressing through the L.T.A. coaching level 1 certificates.
The Club Coach, Graeme Walker, has designed a full and comprehensive programme for the entire year, to suit all standards of play. Great emphasis has been directed towards the juniors and in particular encouraging them to play competitions and this has proved successful. The club entered the Road To Wimbledon, along with having 3 junior teams competing in the local Tennis Tayside leagues. The senior membership also enjoy the competitive edge of our sport, entering teams into this year’s Scottish Cup and having a total of 7 senior teams also doing battle in the Tayside leagues during the summer and winter.
A delighted Jean said when receiving the Tennis Scotland Club of the Year Award, “Our drive to improve the club does not end here, we are now planning to re-surface our other 3 remaining courts, But we will have a rest for a few weeks before we embark on this upgrade!”
